Given that the Pixel 4 never made it to India, there was always a lot riding on the Google Pixel 4a. For the Pixel 4a to function, Google had to get a lot of things right, especially the pricing.
I used to prefer the OnePlus 3T over the Pixel since I couldn't afford to spend more than $500 on a phone. Because of Google's outstanding photo capabilities, I had rallied behind a Pixel over an iPhone at that point.
review
Google accomplished everything it needed to launch the Pixel 4a. It's like if Google showed up with the best student in the class. Since middle school, the Pixel 4a has consistently ranked #1. The Pixel 4a will not jump out of the yearbook or be voted "most likely to succeed" because it is neither the most intriguing nor the most adventurous student. It simply does what it is supposed to do in a quiet manner.
The Pixels have long been noted for their ability to click on images. We've reached a point in the evolution of smartphone technology when most manufacturers are trying to cram as many sensors as possible into the camera module on the rear. The Pixel 4a has just one 12.2MP camera (with an 8MP in a handy punchhole for selfies) - and that's basically all it needs.
I upgraded from the Pixel 3a, which I had been using as my main driver for a long time until switching to the Apple side of things earlier this year and making it my main driver for photography.
On paper, this 12.2MP sensor isn't particularly impressive. Consider the 108MP sensors found on some of today's flagships! However, Google is able to do what it does because of its great software capabilities. But keep in mind that the flex is only for photos, not videos. In terms of video, Google still has a long way to go.
Whether you're on the road or at a late-night party, the Pixel 4a's camera has you covered. The photographs are bright, colorful without being oversaturated, more true to life, and as simple to use as a point-and-shoot camera can get. You don't have to do much more than click and post.
However, when compared to other flagship products, the Pixel 4a's camera feels slow. This is due to two factors. For starters, rival flagships lack the image processor found in the Pixel 4a, and it runs on the Snapdragon 730G SoC. There are currently faster mobile chipsets in use on handsets.
It is, however, nothing that will keep you up at night. You can't possibly have anything to complain about with the photographs it creates, even in low light.
If you do, I'd like to remind you that this robust, no-nonsense smartphone cost you $299.
In many ways, the Pixel 4a is, as I have stated, that constant, boring class topper. The "boring" elements include things like a 60Hz refresh rate and the Snapdragon 730G processor. The bezel-less OLED screen is bright with the correct color pop, the phone is tiny at 5.8 inches, it's handy, and it's incredibly light, like a good student who is expected to accomplish what is anticipated. It's a huge comfort not to feel like you're lugging about a tome.
For the time being, there are three compact phones that you can rely on: the Pixel 4a, the iPhone SE 2020, and the iPhone 12 mini. If the camera is important to you, go with the Pixel 4a; for everything else, you're on your own.
When you combine all of these factors, you'll see that the Pixel 4a makes a lot of sense. Sure, there aren't any foldable screens or stylus capabilities, and there aren't any back cameras. With a 90Hz or 120Hz display, it's also not blazing quick or snappy. However, unless your existing phone already has such functions, you won't actually 'need' them.
All of the apps are functional, the battery life is adequate (I received more than a day's worth of use from a single charge), and you can use this device for whatever you need. You will notice lag if you switch from a OnePlus or a Samsung to the Pixel 4a, you have been warned. But, with photographs like this, you'll get used to the lag in a matter of days.
However, as the device gets older, you will notice that it becomes noticeably slower. And right out of the box, the Pixel 4a is slower than its competitors. You'll be tempted to upgrade at that point, but the faultless camera will make you reconsider replacing a Pixel so quickly.
You just spent $300 on a device, and you may have to do it again next year - in fact, you may have no choice because everything has slowed down. If you want your gadget to live longer, a OnePlus/Samsung or an Apple may be a better choice.
The fact that most individuals who wanted to buy the Pixel 4a were left waiting because it sold out minutes after it went on sale tells a lot about this phone. Also, many people who want to buy it have been moaning about not being able to find it online, or even offline. Google needs to figure this out, and pandemic is no longer an excuse – look at all the other businesses!
In reality, as the headline suggests, the Pixel 4a is my favorite Android gadget of 2020. It's a genuine, good smartphone with a camera that will astound you. It isn't the most exciting Android gadget 2020 has seen, but that doesn't matter; interesting things, like interesting things, have fairly limited shelf life.
